Furthernoise issue November 2008.

Welcome to the November issue of Furthernoise. In what has been a truly momentous year for all sorts of reasons, we are proud to finish it off with a brand new issue stacked to the gunwales with new releases and an audio player restocked with new tunes to take you through into the new year. Furthernoise is the sister site of www.furtherfield.org

Furthernoise issue November 2008
http://www.furthernoise.org/index.php?iss=71

"The Birth of Primary Cinema from the Spirit of Sound - Feature Article by Frank Rothkamm" (feature) Primary Cinema remains cinema, it is not painting or staged photography. It is comprehended as a sequence of images with sound which ultimately constructs its meaning. It de-emphasizes change and reduces bright-ness and distributes events on a galactic scale, but despite its apparent emptiness it remains true cinema as the marriage of projected images and sound in space and time.
feature by Frank Rothkamm

"The Gyres, Between Nowhere and Goodbye, The End of Everything" (feature)
Cathal Rodgers moonlights from his grubby guitarings with Irish doom-mongers Wreck Of The Hesperus as Wereju. Moonlight is apposite in application to Wereju, less evil more eerie twin, drawing out long rays of wild half-lit nightshade shimmer over grey evacuated fields, a sound described by the artist as "ageless drifting melancholia of an abandoned planet".
http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=261
feature by Alan Lockett

"A Ritual Which is Incomprehensible (to the smile of Pauline Oliveros) - Claudio Parodi" (review) The second in an ongoing series of conceptual works by Claudio Parodi sourcing and manipulating music from Tiziano Milano's Suoni CD (2005), not so much to remix but as staple material for processing in the studio. This time as with the last, the album is dedicated to a well known sound artist, and Pauline Oliveros is the chosen one on this occasion.
review by Roger Mills

"Bedside Stories - Taub" (review)
Bedside Stories is the new release by Taub, aka Me Raabenstein and Harold Nono. It is a work of haunting sonic landscapes and fragmented realities, glued together with precision and beauty. It will lull you into worlds of spacious minimal sounsdcapes and sonic cinematic journeys, which constantly resolve back to a single sound event or just quiet.

"Document 2 - Sevenhourgerm" (review)
Document 2 by Sevenhourgerm aka Matthew Atkins is a CDR including nine experimental tracks released on the Minimal Resource Manipulation label. Found sounds and noise are crafted into varying degrees of coherency, with rhythm and melody flirting at the edge of perception.
review by Alex Young

"Electronic Drifting: The Music of Richard Lainhart" (review)
Many contemporary musicians take their inspiration from natural processes. Richard Lainhart's musical models come from clouds, flames and waves, whose nebulous and ever shifting formations are the catalyst for his beautiful electronic works.
review by Caleb Deupree

"Imperfect Silence - Various" (review)
Imperfect Silence is a radical collaboration between artists working together purely online. Global boundaries and cultural differences make way for free jazz and diverse sonic improvisation, as Phil Hargreaves edits together the material to provide a personal narrative of Cadavre Esquis.
"Italian Noise Label Dokura Serves up 3 Mini Cdrs" (review)
Dokura is an Italian noise label that releases limited edition tapes, 3 inch CDRs and the occasional vinyl lp from a variety of international artists. With 10 releases to date, the little label seems to be aiming at noise of the instrumental variety swinging closer to the lo-fi dark ambient drone.
review by Derek Morton

"Lost Hilde - Stray Ghost" (review)
The releases on Highpoint Lowlife switch genres like someone channel surfing through alternative music TV. Lost Hilde adds yet another station to the programming, and an engrossing one at that. Everything begins as a smooth midnight cruise through glitched and looped synthetic sounds.
review by Max Schaefer

"Sympathetic Vibration - Marcus Jones" (review)
Often, recordings exist as complete works in themselves, or as documents or mementos of a live performance. Sympathetic Vibration is one of a rapidly expanding body of works that do not fit easily into either category, blurring the boundaries between recorded materials and live event. Stacey Sewell chats to its creator, phonographer and sound designer Markus Jones.
International call for artists to collaborate with companies in Catalonia now open

DISONANCIAS is a platform that liaises and promotes relationships between artists and companies, research centres or public organisations in order to foster innovation in all its aspects and transmit to society the importance of developing creative environments.

It is based on the idea that artists are, by definition, researchers and can contribute to proposing new and different paths of innovation, introducing detours and discords in the normal processes of thought and action, contributing creativity and work methodologies and serving as a catalyst for the members of a team.

DISONANCIAS is based on:
- giving priority to the participation of committed entities with social responsibility and sustainable development;
- seeking collaboration between artists or groups of artists who share this commitment and who are interested in interacting with areas beyond that of the strictly artistic;
- understanding innovation not as an end in itself but as a tool for changing the way things are done, attitudes and values.
The results of the DISONANCIAS projects must therefore aspire to go beyond success in the marketplace or public acceptance in order to contribute to the construction of a society that is orientated towards values of diversity, balance, sustainability, flexibility and the spirit of risk.

Our international call for artists to collaborate with companies in Catalonia is now open

Deadline to apply: 9th of December 2008, at 9am (spanish time).

Five entities may conduct investigations in collaboration with artists or goups of artists. The research projects, which will be developed between January and September 2009, are the following ones: new paradigms in the area of the increased cognition in the future manned missions of planetary exploration (GTD, Ingenieria de Sistemas y Software), new dynamics and environments of work in the R+D Department (Telefónica i+d), the development of a multitouch prototype of multiple applications (Eidola), creative dynamics in the image department (TV3) and the development of an external meeting point related to architectures for public spaces (Trànsit projectes).

You will find complete information, documentation and details about each body and research proposal in our website http://www.disonancias.com

The program is supported by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the business agency ACC1Ò, in addition to the collaboration of 22 @ Barcelona and Hangar.
ABOUT THE VERSIONS:
One of the advantages of online distribution which I can control is that I don’t have to permanently fix the book’s contents. Like contemporary software and web services, the book can change as often as I like, with new “features” and “big fixes” added periodically. I plan to take advantage of these possibilities. From time to time, I will be adding new material and making changes and corrections to the text.
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, Full-time, Tenure-track
PHOTOGRAPHY/NEW MEDIA

The University of Delaware Department of Art (UD/ART) seeks an innovative artist and educator whose practice investigates the implications of lens-based culture in the twenty first century. This person will lead the discussion exploring the vast creative possibilities and the cultural concerns surrounding photographic media. We are interested in lens-based media’s relationship to representation, surveillance, mechanical reproduction, and the nature of the image or imaging in the “information age.”

The ideal candidate will technically and conceptually address the way that the image/information is captured (input), edited (processed), and presented (output), and should have specific expertise in one or more of the following areas:
•	developing or exploiting mechanisms for capturing images
•	manipulating visual information through digital software and programming, experimental analog processes, or a hybridization of digital and analog
•	investigating modes of display and distribution from printing, projection, and the “screen,” to digital transmission or 3-D forms

Qualifications: The artist we seek will teach a full-time load of beginning to advanced undergraduate courses in our photography/new media area and be an active faculty member in an interdisciplinary MFA program. The ideal candidate should have an interest in addressing the aesthetic, historic, and ideological implications of lens-based image production while leading our photography/new media area. This person must be enthusiastic about and open to the broad range of work produced in an interdisciplinary department, which includes Fine Art and Visual Communication. S/he will also oversee, help maintain, and guide the discussion about the development of a comprehensive lens-based media facility.

We require an MFA or equivalent, college level teaching experience, and a serious commitment to personal creative practice. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Starting Date: September 1, 2009

Application Deadline: January 25, 2009

Application Procedure: Our preferred method for application and portfolio submission is online via: http://udart.slideroom.com.
Include: letter of introduction, curriculum vitae, three references with contact information, artist statement, teaching philosophy, and up to twenty still images and/or up to 5 minutes of video: (.jpg), video (.mov, .wmv, .flv) or PDF documents. For good image quality and fast upload, images should be sized no larger than 1280 x 1280 pixels @ 72 dpi. Video files must be kept under 20MB.
Indicate availability for CAA Conference interview. Interviews at CAA by appointment only. The curriculum vitae and other application materials may be shared with departmental faculty.
General Information: The University of Delaware is a research land/sea grant institution with 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The main campus is located in the residential town of Newark, a suburban community of 60,000 about 15 miles from Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city. We are situated midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Newark is also about two hours by train or car north to New York City or south to Washington, D.C. Wilmington provides Amtrak service to all points along the eastern seaboard.

The Department of Art has 400 undergraduate majors pursuing either the BA or BFA degree. Our undergraduate Fine Arts core includes Ceramics, Photography, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, with upper-level, self-directed study. We also offer an undergraduate program in Visual Communications, which includes courses in Graphic Design, Illustration, Advertising Design, Applied Photography, New Media, and interdisciplinary electives. We offer several study abroad opportunities, complementing department and interdisciplinary programs. The department’s two-year, discipline-integrated MFA program fosters a communal teaching model where students dialogue with faculty, professionals and other graduate students outside of their perceived “field.” The department’s facilities and resources can accommodate a maximum of 30 graduate students.

Currently the department has a lighting studio, 15-station color darkroom, 20-station black and white darkroom. and 6 private darkrooms. UD/ART maintains four studio buildings, including a new facility housing Ceramics, Printmaking, and Sculpture. The department also maintains a gallery in its main building. In addition, UD/ART has a state-of-the-art Macintosh-based computing facility with over 30 separate workstations, and a digital output center. The university library also houses a Student Multimedia Design Center which lends video and still cameras and provides studios and advanced workstations for digital editing.

The University has recently completed a new strategic plan, which focuses on innovation, among other goals. UD/ART is proactive about the university’s mission “to be recognized around the world as one of the great public institutions of higher education in America.”
Fritz Haeg: Current Thoughts & Actions
Fritz Haeg
Wednesday, December 3
7:00 p.m.
The Urban Center
457 Madison Avenue

Fritz Haeg blurs the boundaries of architecture, landscape design, art, ecology, activism, performance, and education. His work rotates between his architecture and design practice Fritz Haeg Studio, the happenings and gatherings of Sundown Salon (now schoolhouse), the ecology initiatives of Gardenlab (including Edible Estates), and other various combinations of building, designing, gardening, exhibiting, dancing, organizing, and talking.

His most recent series of projects, “Animal Estates,” debuted at the Whitney Biennial with commissioned performances and installations in front of the museum. It is followed by six other editions in 2008, commissioned by museums and art institutions in the U.S. and abroad. His first book, Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawm, was published by Metropolis Books and distributed by D.A.P. in spring 2008. The project develops prototypes of edible landscapes to replace traditional grass lawns. Sundown Salon in words and pictures will be released in 2009 by Evil Twin.

Haeg has produced projects and exhibited work at Tate Modern, London; the Whitney Museum of American Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Casco Office of Art, Design and Theory, Utrecht; Mass MoCA; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; the Wattis Institute, San Francisco; the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Maastricht; The Indianapolis Museum of Art; and the MAK Center, Los Angeles, among other institutions.

He studied architecture in Italy at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and Carnegie Mellon University, where he received his B. Arch. He has variously taught in architecture, design, and fine art programs at CalArts, Art Center College of Design, Parsons, and the University of Southern California. In 2006 he initiated Sundown Schoolhouse, the self-organized educational environment originally based in his geodesic dome in Los Angeles. The Bernardi House, renovations and additions to a 1920’s residence, was featured this past summer in the New York Times.

Opening Friday November 21, 2008 from 6pm-10pm
November 21 - December 20

Time Lapse is last in a series of four exhibitions: Time Travelers, Time Machine, Time Lapse, and Time Lapse: Antena, curated by Amelia Winger-Bearskin. Time Travelers, was shown at Polvo in Chicago, 2007; Time Machine in Washington DC at Meat Market Gallery this past summer; Time Lapse in Nashville, Tn at Vanderbilt University and Time Lapse: Antenna will be shown in the same Chicago space where the project began bringing us back in time to the beginning.

Time Lapse is single channel video art show; all videos are displayed through a single projector one after another in the style of film screenings and time-lapse photography. Time unfolds and is captured systematically by an optical lens and/or digital media, the subjects of the videos are often overlapping, there is not an intimate knowing but a careful study of sequence, there are also holes, lapses and mistakes, there are doubts in the work.

And while it may appear obvious to time travelers that there need only be ONE time based art show for travelers to coordinate their time machines to that exact date and place, no time traveling devices were detected at the first show and the subsequent efforts have been made to make sure there is progress in this time space continuum while leaving open the idea that once this information is recorded it will likely be changed by the time travelers, machines and lapses who frequent these events from a future and past date in "time".

Amelia Winger-Bearskin is a Video/Performance Artists who is currently teaching at Vanderbilt University, Nashville Tn in the areas of Video, Performance and Drawing. She is a featured artists for the Perpetual Art Machine [PAM] and is currently creating solo video and installation works about Andrew Jackson and his home in Nashville Tn. She is also currently working on a new series of video art curations in the near future.
Rick Prelinger presents
Lost Landscapes of San Francisco

Rick Prelinger is a guerrilla archivist who collects the uncollected and makes it accessible. Prelinger will be presenting his third annual "Lost Landscapes of San Francisco" event, an eclectic montage of lost and rarely-seen film clips showing life, landscapes and labor in a vanished San Francisco as captured by amateurs, newsreel cameramen and industrial filmmakers.

We encourage the audience to interact with the film, especially to identify mystery scenes! After the event will be a reception and holiday party at The Long Now Museum and Store. The Prelingers, Long Now's staff and board will be on hand, and we plan to continue to project footage from the Prelinger Archive on every surface we can. There will be some light snacks and wine served.

The Seminars About Long-term Thinking were started in 02003 to build a coherent, compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking, to help nudge civilization toward Long Now's goal of making long-term thinking automatic and common instead of difficult and rare.
