Trained as a painter, Stephanie Owens has continued to explore the paradoxical relationship between materiality and representation in her work in digital media. In both her painting and digital work, she has focused on notions of system failures, muteness, absence and the post-representational tension between form and content. Ultimately all of her work addresses questions about the nature of human expression within restrictive systems and the gap between systemic logic and our experience.

Owens has an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and has lived and worked in New York City since 1994. She has exhibited her work in Chicago and New York, most recently at MediaNoche Gallery in Manhattan.

As a designer Owens was co-founder and Creative Director of Oddcast, a NYC -based technology company whose innovations include some of the first online media communities and personalized media environments. Owens has been a frequent speaker on the subject of the culture of new media and is currently an instructor at Parsons School of Art and Design (New York) where she teaches aesthetics and thesis studio in the Graduate Department of Design & Technology.
